Resolved heat transfer to walls in rotary furnaces

Heat is transferred from the inner walls of rotary furnaces towards the granular feedstock by radiation and conduction ; at the same time, inner and outer walls experience heat exchange with fluid and ambient respectively.

This study proposed a combined discrete-continuous approach to predict heat losses through the walls of rotary furnaces, such as occurring in rotary kilns.  Discrete Particle Method is employed to solve the particulate and a dynamic-mesh variant of the conjugated Heat Transfer of OpenFoam resolves fluid and continuous walls. The study is currently being carried out as part of a civil engineering project degree within the LuXDEM group at the university of Luxembourg.
